Fiction Submissions:

1) Perigee considers fiction from 500 to 5,000 words.
       · The submissions must be short stories or novel excerpts.

2) To make sure your fiction submission will not be rejected from the outset, follow these guidelines:
       · Follow MLA format.
       · Double space your manuscript.
       · All pages should have a header with your last name and the page number.
       · The first page should have your full name, address, phone number, and e-mail in the upper left hand corner.
       · When possible, include a word count on the first page, upper right hand corner.
       · The title should be centered on the first page.

3) Include a cover letter introducing yourself and your story.
       · One page only, please.
       · Standard, block letter format.
       · Include the cover letter in the same file, or e-mail it to "submit[at]perigee-art[dot]com" with your story's title in the subject line.

4) A very brief (50 words or less) bio should be included with your submission.
       · Place your bio blurb inside your submission, at the end of the document.
Our Fiction Editor Advises:

"I look for character driven narratives with authentic sounding descriptions and dialogue, sparkling metaphors, clean lines flowing rhythmically, a story told with controlled passion and heart giving insights into what we call the human condition. I also welcome the avant-garde as long as it adds up to something rich, original, and intellectually satisfying."

Our Managing Editor Advises:

"When it comes to fiction, the old adage is true: start in the middle. That is to say, as close to the end as possible (a la every Poe story written). This goes hand in hand with one of the most important things a story can do: grab me in the beginning. I appreciate fiction that tries something new but also doesn't abandon the core concepts of story craft—concepts which have existed with good reason for generations. Every sentence must fight for its place in the narrative or it deserves to be cut."

Ernest Hemingway Advises:
"The most essential gift for a good writer is a built-in, shock-proof, shit detector. This is the writer's radar and all great writers have it."

Kurt Vonnegut Advises:
"Every sentence must do one of two things: reveal character or advance the action."
