A Year of Mourning
by Ruth Dombrow
|
Shivering in the summer heat
teeth clenched to control
the chatter
of an afternoon lawn party
the clatter
of plates passing egg salad
as if the hunger
for you could be soothed
with mayonnaise.
Sweltering on a winter day
filled with a looming void
as longing sweats its way
though flannel shirts
and cups of lemon tea
to try to soothe the loss.
A year of mourning lasts
a long time.
